Why I Became a Mathematician: A Math Story

In High School, my Sony Walkman and I were inseparable. While everyone was at home watching their TVs and sitting around, I wandered the streets and listened to my favorite radio station at the time, “Açık Radyo.” One day, Açık Radyo introduced a program called Math Stories, where Tosun Terzioglu talked in detail about mathematics in a smooth and calm tone.

Tosun Terzioglu was a brilliant mathematician who I wasn’t familiar with at the time. His obsession and focus on mathematics are what triggered my interest in math. I remember in one of his talks, he went into great detail about why he became a mathematician. Listening to that was the turning point for me.

Years later, I see his story again while I go through old math magazines. This time, I would like to share Professor Terzioglu’s story of becoming a mathematician, and I am sure his story will inspire you and your children as well.
